Nothing screams “comfort food” like mashed potatoes and salisbury steak smothered in the T H I C K gravy. Am I right?
My parents made this for my brothers and I all the time growing up, and it was one of my favorite meals. Warming, hearty, and just YUM.
Of course, I had to “Jayme-fy” is to be gluten/dairy-free…and it turned out amazing! Four out of four peeps in my house would recommend it. And it was such a hit when I shared it on Instagram that I knew it had to have some real estate of it’s own on my blog.
SALSIBURY STEAK + DAIRY-FREE MASHED POTATOES
Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 15 min
Total time: 25 min
Serves: 4
INGREDIENTS
Salisbury steak:
1 lb Butcher Box grass-fed ground beef
1 whole egg
1/4 tsp garlic powder
salt + pepper, to taste
Dairy-Free Mashed Potatoes:
1 bag honey gold potatoes
1 heaping Tbsp ghee
roughly 1/4 C unsweetened almond milk
1/4 tsp garlic powder
couple pinches on salt + pepper
Gluten-Free Gravy:
residual juices from pan after cooking the beef
1.5 C beef bone broth
1 tsp arrowroot starch (I like Bob’s Red Mill)
salt + pepper to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
In a bowl, mix together beef, egg, and spices till well combined. Divide into 4 equal patties. Sprinkle with a little S + P and then place into a hot skillet. Cook till halfway done (about 4-5 min) and then flip and allow to cook another 4 min. Add a splash of water, cover, and reduce heat to low. Cook another 2-3 min or until completely done. Remove from pan.
Next, increase heat to med/high. Add bone broth to pan; whisking to get all the yummy bits off the bottom. Once boiling, add arrowroot starch and whisk constantly until it starts to thicken. Add beef patties back in and allow to sit in the gravy and get even more yummy.
For the potatoes, simply boil potatoes till tender. Add almond milk, ghee, and spices; blend with a handmixer till smooth (minus the small lumps from the potato skins).
In other news, the hubs and I will be traveling to Spain this week (EEK!) to celebrate our 10-year anniversary. So I’ll be “out of the office” through the next two weeks. BUT thanks to a little post-preppin’, I have another yummy, comforting meal in store for you guys later this week…so stay tuned, because you’re definitely going to be making this one on repeat this fall/winter!
